The author of this book, James Kingzett, passed away from a Brain Tumor in July of 2023.
He had been working on this book for over five years and was in the editing process when he was diagnosed.
His great passions were renewable energy, eating healthy, and, of course, being prepared..
We were not prepared for his terminal diagnosis.
His doctors always asked him for a list of his prescriptions, to which he replied, “None.” Instead, he followed a very strict morning regime of Lemon Water, banana tea, and exercise and was adamant about always having a good night’s sleep.
We first acquired a few sections of land in the early 90s, 30 miles east of Reno, Nevada, in a KGRA (a known geothermal resource area). Chevron explored the lands in the early 80s but eventually abandoned them. I believe they were actually looking for oil. We eventually bought more land and were looking for someone to partner with on the resource. Jim ran into an old acquaintance from college who had a renewable energy company in Bend, Oregon. After many months of negotiations, Vulcan Power Co. bought the options on the Geothermal energy located beneath the surface. Large investments were spent on drilling and exploration. The economy was not on our side; Vulcan became Gradient Energy which was sold to Cyrq which is now part of Macquarrie.
However, they did create a 48-megawatt power plant to supply the city of Sacramento with power. They also supply energy to Fallon, NV, and parts of Idaho. This was what they were looking for from the beginning. The plant still operates to this day with supplemental solar fields known as Patua Hot Springs.
Jim’s vision was to create an “inside the fence” project that would be immune to or at least self-reliant in case of a total energy outage. His vision is the inspiration for the book. Jim always laughed at me when I called him a prepper, not a preppy.
The book acts as a cautionary tale of things that might be, whether from the sky, the earth, or mankind.
Be Prepared.
